How Big Is This Leak?

BP released footage of the oil leak.

BP has been saying this is 5,000 BPD (barrels per day). NPR reports that estimate is too low by an order of magnitude. It could be 70,000 BPD. Gail the Actuary at the Oil Drum invites you to get out your calculator.

  1. The terrible thing is that there are ways to contain the spill or get rid of it. If they had started early they could have surrounded the spill with a net and sucked the oil off top. There are also bacteria that eat the oil. Why haven't they done this!

  2. I'd like to know why they haven't just put a big old hose over the top of the broken pipe and started collecting into something. Seems simple enough to me. The need to get some of these old time Appalachian still makers down there!

  3. They are hoping to fill up the golf of Mexico with crude instead of water. That way you just have to put a hose in it get oil, and it will solve the problem with hurricanes in the golf, and by shutting down the golf current they will reverse global warming.

    Everybody wins!
