God is a Concept By Which We Measure Our Pain

I was a Freshman in college when John Lennon was shot. Lennon knew the spirituality of deconstruction. He was only 40 when he died. I am already 46. It is amazing how some people can live so much in such a short time.

Here are the lyrics:

God is a Concept by which
we measure our pain
I'll say it again
God is a Concept by which
we measure our pain
I don't believe in magic
I don't believe in I-ching
I don't believe in Bible
I don't believe in Tarot
I don't believe in Hitler
I don't believe in Jesus
I don't believe in Kennedy
I don't believe in Buddha
I don't believe in Mantra
I don't believe in Gita
I don't believe in Yoga
I don't believe in Kings
I don't believe in Elvis
I don't believe in Zimmerman
I don't believe in Beatles
I just believe in me
Yoko and me
That's reality

The dream is over
What can I say?
the Dream is Over
Yesterday
I was the Dreamweaver
But now I'm reborn
I was the Walrus
But now I'm John
and so dear friends
you'll just have to carry on
The Dream is over

  1. John Lennon by himself never really made much sense to me.

He was always the first half of Lennon-McCartney. But the sum of the parts was less than the whole.

But if he had lived I believe he would have pushed through his deconstruction phase and ended up someplace really cool. That is the biggest tragedy of his early demise. He just left us hanging. Bits and pieces strewn about like a car in the driveway that someone took apart and never put back together again. Not a car anymore, and not much of anything else either...

A metaphor of the 60s to the end.

  2. Hey Jodie, you may have a point there. He was still free falling.

  3. "He just left us hanging."

With all due respect, I have to take issue with this.

I doubt John planned on being murdered. Had he, I'm sure he would have clarified all things to all people before he left. Those "bits and pieces" were left by an assassin. Not John Lennon.

  4. Duhh...

Can't I have just a little poetic license?

Of course someone else was involved, but I choose to not honor such person with any kind of remembrance at all. May he be forever forgotten and no record kept of him ever having walked among the living.

(In the movie "The Unforgiven" there is a line I'll always remember:

"its a terrible thing to kill a man, you take away everything he's got, and everything he's ever gonna get")
