  1. John,

I hear the repeated idea that this is a war based on corporate profit. Is there a resource to which I can turn to verify that claim? Particular companies would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

  2. Chris,

Here are a couple of articles that address your question. You might ask the folks at concernedTNcitizens for their take.

My personal concern is larger than specific corporations as such. I think Americans are all accountable for what we will allow the administration to do on our behalf. I will publish a post soon regarding that.

  3. Chris,
There are several places you can look online for information about a corporate connection to the war in Iraq. I would suggest www.Znet.org
as a first great place, and of course, John's recommendations. Noam Chomsky probably has more information on this than you would want to know about. Also, a speaker I heard recently is Antonia Juhasz. There is a link to her information and book on the Concerned TN Citizens blog www.PeaceTN.blogspot.com Look under the DC Rally Recap posting.

It is difficult to not make the connection when the top three people in the Administration (Bush, Cheney, and Rice) are all past oil execs.

Also, here is a statement of purpose off the website for the Project for a New American Century, founded by many of the heavy hitters in the administrations of Reagan, Bush I and Bush II, including James Baker and Dick Cheney: "we need to promote the cause of political and economic freedom abroad". This group has been advocating the takeover of Iraq since about 1992.

That reference to "economic freedom" would be what Noam Chomsky referred to as the "Fifth Freedom" or the freedom to rob other countries of their natural resources. Check out his book "Manufacturing Consent" and some of his earlier essays in "Towards a New Cold War".

Of course, if you do jump into these recommended readings, you will want something to occasionally clear your head and keep you from tearing your hair out. I recommend the "Get Fuzzy" comic strip compilations :)

Since there are no moral grounds for the war, and there have never been any political grounds for the war (no WMDs, no connection to 9/11, etc), the main thing that keeps coming up is how much money so many of these companies have been making since the war began(Halliburton and its subsidiaries, Carlysle Group, Blackwater, Bechtel, Exxon, etc).
