Rachel Maddow noted on her show yesterday that she was born and raised in California and now lives in Massachusetts with her partner. Everywhere she seems to move now seems to get marriage equality (she only lives part-time in New York, so that's why they only got halfway there).
This is great news, esp. as Maddow points out, that once the initial furor died down and people in Massachusetts saw that the sky did not fall once gay people started marrying each other, the momentum for amending the state constitution died.
Funny note (at least for a Civics Geek and someone interested in state constitutions like me): I heard a Con bemoaning the fact that this proves once again that the Legislature is the weakest branch of government. Well, yeah, at least in California. It's a Voter Initiative state (unlike Tennessee or Georgia). The legislature is SUPPOSED to be weak there.
yes! i saw this on the news yesterday when i was at the gym, and i'm pretty sure i was totally obvious with my HUGE smile. and i couldn't help but praise God as i was about to die on the stair stepper.
I usually hate California because it is a land of self absorbed people who think the sun shines out their butts but in this case I'm prepared to say, "Way to go California!"
We continue to be the leading indicator of where the rest of the nation will be in ten or twenty years.
