Remembering Our Dead

This is a tragic story. From PFLAG
On the night of Sunday, November 9th, Duanna Johnson, a transgender woman, was shot to death in Memphis, Tennessee – almost a week before Transgender Remembrance Day. After witnesses reported hearing gunshots, three people were seen fleeing the crime scene – Johnson’s body was found lying in the street. Memphis police officials have yet to identify any suspects. Thoughts and prayers for family and friends of Duanna from all of us at PFLAG Tri-Cities and our thoughts and prayers to all who are at risk because of hatred and violence.
Like Tyra Hunter, Gwen Araujo, Brandon Teena and so many others, Johnson joins a tragically long list of transgender and gender non-conforming people who have met their end because of unembarrassed hatred and violence. Study after study indicates that transgender and gender non-conforming people face a higher risk of harassment, vandalism and assault. A simple visit to Remembering Our Dead, provides a disturbing snapshot of what this hatred and violence renders.
