"If God, as they say, is homophobic, I wouldn't worship that God."

Thanks to Archbishop Desmond Tutu for saying that in a critique of the Anglican church. Here is the article:

In an interview with BBC Radio 4, he said the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, had failed to demonstrate that God is "welcoming".

He also repeated accusations that the Church was "obsessed" with the issue of gay priests.

He said it should rather be focusing on global problems such as Aids.

"Our world is facing problems - poverty, HIV and Aids - a devastating pandemic, and conflict," said Archbishop Tutu, 76.

"God must be weeping looking at some of the atrocities that we commit against one another.

  1. Tutu has been on a roll lately. He also spoke up against Capital Punishment a couple days ago in the Guardian. Good stuff.

  3. Thanks Doug and Aric. I just wandered over to Aric's blog and saw his post on Tutu and the Death Penalty.

He is one good man. I heard his daughter speak in Nashville. A chip off the old block.

  4. Quick! Someone report that madman to an executive presbyter!

I count Tutu among a very small number of people I consider to be truly Christlike (and this has nothing to do with The Gay but everything to do with his efforts at reconciliation in post-apartheid South Africa).

  5. Tutu gets it.

I heard the sermon a pastor preached before his congregation voted to leave the PCUSA the other day.

    He did not get it.

With all the real problems facing the world today, the best this pastor could come up with was a prayer for the rest of us left behind, that we would be given a leader and a shepherd to show us the error of our ways so we too could become homophobic imitators of Christ like them.

    Just amazing.

  6. I remember an interview Tutu had with Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show". He said something that's stuck with me ever since (though I have to wildly paraphrase, and I can't capture that beautiful African accent):

I think that when God sees us killing and hurting each other, he looks on us and it breaks his heart, and he says "I wish they would love each other like I told them to". But when God sees us helping each other and loving each other, he claps his hands in joy and says, "yes! That's why I created them!"
