The Adventures of Fagbug

Saw this on NPR's website:

Erin Davies got an unexpected response to the rainbow sticker on her Volkswagen Beetle. Davies, living in Albany, N.Y., saw that someone had taken the gay rights message as an opportunity to add an another message. In red spray paint. And crazy letters.

The culprit, whoevever it was, scrawled "fAg" and "u r gay" across the hood and driver's side of her car.

Instead of removing the graffiti, Davies decided to take her bug on a 58-day cross-country tour and make a documentary about it. Her saga began on April 18, 2007. Now she's racing to finish the movie in time for the first anniversary. (Read More)

Then I checked out Erin's website Fagbug.

Her mission?

Erin's goal is to get one million people (both gay and straight) to add rainbow fagbug stickers to their cars so that no one is targeted like she was again. To order a fagbug sticker or t-shirt, visit the fagbug store.

Thank you, Erin! I look forward to the movie! You can also follow her progress on her blog.

Erin's activism got me to thinking. I noticed that the Tricities area does not have a
PFLAG Chapter (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). I was involved in the local chapter when I was in Billings, Montana. It is an important organization that offers support and encouragement to sexual and gender minorities and their families and allies.

I wonder if there might be interest in starting a group to serve the Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol, Elizabethton area. Tell you what. If enough folks (and I don't know how many--perhaps just one) are interested in starting a group here, I will gladly organize it.

It is time to stop the hate.

  1. Awesome campaign ... but I wish it did not have to exist at all...

  2. WOW! I actually live in a suburb of Albany, but did not know about this.

Like drew says- it is great, but how sad that it has to exist.

    Thanks for promoting this.

  3. Count me in on the PFLAG chapter, John!

  5. Thanks for bringing this to my short attention span. I'm down with fagbug now.
