  2. First a couple of civics-geek caveats:

We're a LONG way from the convention. So far, in the Democratic Primary, elections and caucuses that will determine 120 delegates have finished. 2,075 pledged delegates will be picked on Super Duper Tuesday (February 5, includes both Tennessee and Georgia). There will be a grand total of 3,253 pledged delegates and 4,049 total delegates (including the 796 "superdelegates" such as Speaker Pelosi, the Democratic state Governors, etc.). THAT will determine who wins the nomination on the D side.

With the conclusion of Nevada, the D side looks like this, unofficially, according to the Washington Post:

    Clinton: 236
    Obama: 136
    Edwards: 50

The R side looks like this, unofficially:
    Romney: 59
    Huckabee: 40
    McCain: 36

If you're scratching your head, it may be because you've forgotten that these are not winner-take-all elections. The delegates are split amongst the top vote-getters according to the state party rules.

To that end, the Post counts the delegates they assume will be certified in a couple months' time. The New York Times does not. It only counts the delegates certified by the state parties. Their results so far:

    Dem:
    Clinton: 9
    Obama: 9
    Edwards: 4

    Rep:
    McCain: 32
    Romney: 27
    Huckabee: 7
    Paul: 0
    Thompson: 0

Note that neither newspaper even puts Kucinich or Giuliani on the board.

Yes, folks, the primary system makes even the Electoral College look halfway sane.

    John McCain: 25%
    Rudy Giuliani: 25%
    Mike Huckabee: 13%

Sorry, Rachel. I still won't vote for Ron Paul.
